Sidewalks, Walkways & Flatwork
Create safe, attractive pathways and concrete surfaces that connect your property and enhance your curb appeal.

Why Quality Sidewalks and Walkways Matter
Sidewalks and walkways are the paths that welcome people to your home or business. They need to be safe, level, and attractive. Cracked or uneven concrete creates tripping hazards that can lead to injuries and liability issues. Well-built pathways protect you, your family, and your guests while adding value to your property.
Richmond weather tests concrete surfaces year-round. Freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rain, and temperature swings cause poor quality concrete to crack and settle. We build sidewalks and walkways using proper techniques that resist these challenges. This includes adequate thickness, reinforcement, control joints, and proper drainage to channel water away from concrete surfaces.
Flatwork is the term we use for any horizontal concrete surface. This includes sidewalks, walkways, equipment pads, shed foundations, and other flat applications. Each project requires specific preparation and finishing techniques. We customize our approach based on how you'll use the space and what you need it to do.
Popular Flatwork Applications
- Front entry sidewalks that create welcoming first impressions
- Garden walkways that connect different areas of your landscape
- Equipment pads for HVAC units, generators, and hot tubs
- Shed foundations and small building slabs for storage structures
- Public sidewalks and ADA-compliant walkways for businesses
Our Flatwork Installation Process
Every sidewalk and walkway project starts with proper site preparation. We excavate to the correct depth, removing grass, roots, and unstable soil. Then we install a compacted gravel base that provides drainage and prevents settling. This foundation work determines how long your concrete lasts, so we never rush this step.
We build forms that define the shape and edges of your concrete. Forms must be level and properly braced to hold concrete in place during pouring. For curved walkways, we use flexible forming materials that create smooth, flowing lines. We double-check all measurements and slopes before pouring concrete.
Most sidewalks and walkways are four inches thick. We add wire mesh reinforcement to prevent cracking. For areas that will support heavier loads, we use thicker concrete or add rebar. After pouring, we level the concrete, finish the surface, and cut control joints. These joints give concrete a place to crack naturally without creating random, unsightly breaks.
We finish sidewalk surfaces with a broom texture for slip resistance. Smooth trowel finishes work for covered areas or when you want a sleeker look. We can also stamp patterns or add color to create decorative walkways that complement your home. Professional concrete installation in Richmond ensures your flatwork looks great and performs well for decades.
Design Options That Match Your Style
Standard concrete walkways are practical and affordable. They feature simple gray concrete with a broom finish for traction. This classic look works well for most homes and businesses. It blends into the background and lets your landscaping take center stage. If you want basic, reliable pathways, standard concrete delivers excellent value.
Colored concrete adds personality without a huge price increase. We mix integral color throughout the concrete or apply surface stains after pouring. You can choose earth tones that blend with natural surroundings or bold colors that make a statement. Color options let you coordinate walkways with your home's exterior or create visual interest in your landscape.
Stamped concrete walkways look like brick, stone, or tile but cost less than these premium materials. We press patterns into wet concrete and add color to create realistic textures. Stamped walkways work beautifully for front entries, garden paths, and pool surrounds. They give you upscale appearance with concrete's durability and lower maintenance.
